Parents Just Don't Understand...How to Name Their Kids

So I was trying to think of something interesting to post today...Since I only have one day I'd better make it good! Then it came to me...weird baby names. I was thinking about all the celebrity babies born so far this summer and it seems like one name is wierder than the next...like it's some kind of competition. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying everyone should name their kid Michael or Jennifer. Wait I think I'm back in the 80's...I mean Aiden or Madison. (Not that there is anything wrong with those names at all!)

What I am talking about is parents who get creative...or a little too creative. I like interesting and different sounding names...such as Eliza. AWESOME!! Because it is an actual name. If you have a child and give them a really cool, different, interesting name-then more power to you for being creative! This is not what I am referring to. If your child has a name that is an actual name - I am not talking about you!

I have not really critiqued the names of most celebrity kids born so far this year - Harlow Madden, Honor Warren, Sunday Urban, and even Knox Jolie Pitt. These could be classified as actual names, Fine. But the last straw was the other day when some guy from General Hospital actually named his son Peanut!!! Seriously...are you kidding me? How much is this kid going to get beat up? Who is going to take him seriously in a job interview? There should be some kind of rules about stuff like this.

Here are some actual celebrities' boy names: Kal-el (aka Superman), Free, Spec Wildhorse, Audio Science, Pilot Inspektor, Kyd, Sage Moonblood, and Pirate.

And here are some actual celebrities' girl names: Camera, Fifi, Moxie, Diva Muffin, God'iss, Dixie Dot, and Jagger.

And don't think it's just celebrities who are this wacky...when my niece was born, my sister in law was sharing a room with another woman who also had a baby girl. The parents thought it would be a great idea to name this child Magi. No not Maggie! The middle part of the word IMAGINE. Pronounced like Majj-ie. I heard that people from the hospital actually tried to convinve them not to name her that but it didn't work. There is a 3 year old named Magi somewhere in New Jersey.

Maybe when it's time to name your baby, you will remember this post and realize that maybe Peanut or Diva Muffin isn't the best idea. Please have some mercy on your child :)

When we were looking at names for our kids I chopped it up every way I could in my mind to see how it could be made fun of...we finally settled with Avery and Lauren. And if the initials spelled something, I had to start all over... I liked Lauren Abigail, but her initials would have been LAW, so we went with Lauren Mackenzie instead!! Oh yea, and I liked Olivia Lauren, but if we ever got it monogrammed (and put last name in the middle) she would be OWL!!! Brian told me I was crazy for thinking like that, but what does he know??????? :)

As soon as I started reading this post I thought of little Peanut. I'm all for being creative and naming your kid what you want but that is just bizarre. Luckily his middle name is Kai which I kinda like. Hopefully that is what everyone will call him. Maybe I'll name the new baby Pistachio instead of Stella.

You forgot about Coco Arquette!
We named our kids unusual names, but stuck with names (Arlington, Finley, Cainan).

There was a woman who gave birth at a hospital I used to work at named her kid Tangerine Velveteen. Yep. And Meconium. I am not even kidding.

A child named Camera? Seriously?

I'm definitely with you on this. Those poor kids are going to put up with SO much crap as they're growing up. Is it really worth it?

This post reminded me of some names in Malawi - Bicycle and Medicine are two I can think of. People who didn't speak English as their first language picked English words they liked the sound of and named their babies accordingly . . .

I think you are right on, though (and I like Eliza, too)! My main criteria in naming was 1) I liked the sound of it, 2) I didn't know anyone with the name, 3) It wasn't on the top 100 list, 4) It had a good meaning, and 5) There were no weird initials or anything else that might cause playground teasing that I could think of.

Of course, along came playground teasing such as "Esmeralda" and "Asthma," but I think we'll teach Esme to deal with that.

I am SO with you on this!! :) When I was looking through baby name books I found some REALLY wierd names even in there...like Barn (what?!!!?). All I know is that my kids will have actual names, not just "words" for names.
