My quest to be a WAHM continue. Yes- I need to make some dough and I don't want to be so desperate for cash I end up swinging on a pole in my skivvies- inside out of course.
OK! So I put another ad up on Craig's List to try and get into this home day care biz! But... I have no idea what to charge or what type of policies I should have. People have asked me about my rates, but I am clueless about what is a reasonable rate. I paid about a little over $1,000 a month when E was in day care. Or I paid like $8.75 and hour with a minimum number of hours a week. I really didn't plan on taking on more than one or two kids at the most.
I was wondering if anyone was willing to offer me some advice. Does anyone pay a sitter who does it out of his/her home? I understand you might not want to share how much you pay- but if you could offer a general range it would be helpful. Also, what type of policies does your sitter have?
Any advice you can offer would help!

I just gave you an award...
I had a nanny for one year for my little one. She came to our home 3 days a week, 30 hours a week. We paid her $12/hour and she also did light house work for us. She was amazing and worth every cent. She came to us, so she charged a little more. I know some people who have the kids come to them charge a little less. I can tell you that my brother in PA is paying $2.50 for his little one (a newborn) to be watched by someone in their home and he is the only baby! That is SO LOW - you need to charge much more than that!!!!
What are other people advertising? I think it really depends on your area, too. I paid $100/wk for a home provider at the beach and now I'm paying $120/wk. Both of those rates are very typical in this area for home providers. They both provide snacks/lunch/milk/juice. At the beach, she only watched my daughter and her daughter that were the same age. Here, she has my daughter, her daughter, and then two sisters.
It absolutely depends where you live. When we lived in Michigan, the going rate was about $160/week for at home daycare, just slightly lower than the bigger centers. The daycare I used before I stopped working also provided diapers and meals (not formula though).
Here in South Carolina, it is lower - I was doing daycare in my home up until recently, and I was making $125/week for one child, age 12 months, mom provided me with diapers, wipes, and sometimes food.
If you divide that out to an hourly rate, it is absolutely pitiful, but at least I got to stay home with my little ones and make a little cash. Of course, if you can handle watching more than 1, you will make more. 3 kids was my max - I can't imagine having more than that. You will need to charge the "going rate" for your area, or obviously no one will use you. Just keep in mind the child's age, cost of extra food, drinks, diapers, wipes, etc. and don;t be afraid to ask the mom to bring supplies for their child, such as sippy cups, snacks, or even an extra high chair or booster seat if you need one.

Hey Danielle, I'm back to work next week :( So sad...and I'm paying my girlfriend $175 a week which I think is INCREDIBLY cheap and feel really bad about! But she's appreciative, says it's enough and I'm going to throw her a great Christmas and Tax Time bonus :) Good luck!! If we lived closer I'd throw Kiera your way lol :)
sorry i'm a little behind here! check craigslist for your area under "child care" to see what others are charging. i live in tx, and in-home care is regulated by the department of family protective services (background checks, inspections, etc).
it's typically about $150-200/week (depending on what they provide and if they teach a curriculum) or $30-40/day for part-time. large day care centers average $250/week here. good luck getting started!!
