Calling all skinny bitches!

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the book Skinny Bitch, but when I hear that a lot of people are reading a book I will jump right on the bandwagon and read it too (like Twilight). Anyway most people would never know until they start reading that the authors of this book are hard core vegans and want to make you one too. It works pretty well...I still can't believe I am drinking soy milk and eating vegan butter! Anyone who knows my obsession for all things pregnancy wouldn't be surprised that I had to pick up the sequel Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven. In case you are wondering, aside from drinking alcohol and smoking (duh)...they say you must stay away from the following when pregnant

  • coffee (regular and decaf)
  • soda (regular and diet)
  • energy drinks
  • medicine and antacids
  • all white flour products (cookies, cake, donuts, pasta, bread, bagels)
  • fried foods
  • sugar
  • anything with caffeine
  • high fructose corn syrup
  • sweet n low, nutra sweet, equal, splenda
  • aspartame
  • simple carbohydrates (candy, white bread, white rice, processed foods)
  • milk and milk products (cheese, ice cream)
  • deli meat or processed meat (hot dogs, bacon)
  • eggs
  • red meat, poultry, seafood, pork
  • butter
So I am thinking...is there anything left in the world to eat??? They would like you to eat only the following for 40 weeks along with at least 10 ounces of water and gentle exercise everyday
  • juice and smoothies (fresh, not packaged)
  • fruit & vegetables (fresh, not canned or processed)
  • leafy greens, legumes, seeds & nuts, oatmeal, brown rice
  • wholegrain bread and muffins
  • caffeine free tea
  • sea vegetables (kelp, seaweed)
  • rice milk or soy milk
Oh yeah, did I mention that everything on this list must be organic?? I am thinking that if this is actually possible, this is going to be the healthiest and also most boring 9 months ever! Did any of you actually eat this healthy when pregnant? I have to admit, I was really looking forward to taco bell and cheese fries the whole time, but maybe I will rethink my plan.

What kind of goodies did everyone eat while pregnant?

I was totally addicted to egg and cheese sanwiches, tuna melts, and cheeseburgers... anything with cheese I think :) but mostly those things...morning noon and night.

Whoever came came up with the list didn't have morning sickness problems, I'm sure! That list is crazy.

I started out eating healthy (not quite THAT), but for the first 4 months all I could stomache was mac & cheese and Taco Bell quesadillas. So then I didn't care anymore, until I had a false positive on the glucose screening test - then I did go easy on the sugar the last 3 months.

I was thinking that who ever came up with this list didn't have heartburn because milk and ice cream are the best cures for that IMO!

I didn't eat any different than I do now.

I believe that book is an experiment on human behavior. It just can't be real!

When I was 3 months pregnant, my parents bought a donut shop. It was an awful business venture for them, but I had access to fresh, handmade donuts just 5 minutes from home. YUM!

I eat pretty healthy. This time around the idea of meat is making e sick. and I am avoiding fried foods too..even though I love me some frries. Um...I need to borrow the book. and too much soy is bad- that is one thing that they are wrong about

I loved ice cream so much with #2 and #1 it was jelly beans. Great post! This month I am dedicating momtrends' editorial to expecting moms and I have great giveaways too! Check out this one:

I'm not sold on the diet advice of two broads who met at a talent agency and decided to "eat better". Read a book from a physician or dietician, not two chicks who make up thing and talk sassy.

WOW! That is a lot of stuff not to be able to eat. My cravings during pregnancy and again this time are anything strawberry. Strawberries by themselves, strawberry shortcake, strawberry smoothie, strawberry muffins. mmmm

I definitely did change some of my eating habits a little. With Jacob I ate out all the time, this time around I am eating wayyyy more leafy and green vegetables - love broccoli. I do enjoy coffee and soda but none ever during pregnancy. I know many who do with no problems but I know any time I was pregnant I just had this willpower to be healthier. Too bad it wouldn't last till after the baby was out lol

I couldn't stick to that list at all. While I normally choose healthy things, I don't deny myself Taco Bell...in fact, I ate it just yesterday for lunch.

I think that list is a bit extreme. For someone who lacks self-discipline, I was amazingly disciplined at eating a healthy diet in both pregnancies. Especially my 2nd, because I was already overweight and didn't want to jeopardize my baby's health by gaining too much weight. I only gained 11 lbs with her. I did allow myself the occasional treat. I think that's totally acceptable when you're pregnant!

I was horribly nauseous 24/7 for the 1st 4 months of both of my pregnancies. I only ate cereal, chocolate donuts, and drank a lof of Coke (I did ry to drink caffeine free when available). Even when the nausea subsided, I pretty much ate "normal" foods - a lot of carbs, sweets, whatever. I gained a normal amount of weight, my pregnancies were healthy, my kids turned out healthy and happy.
While I think it is great to try to be healthy, especially during pregnancy, I don't think that worrying about being skinny or starving yourself with a list of 10 food items for 9 months is healthy at all!

No pasta or sugar? Oh my goodness! I couldn't handle that. With Grace, I ate pickle and cheese sandwiches with bbq chips. Weird but that is what I craved. I haven't eaten one since. With Noah, I was very sick so I had natural ginger ale and crackers.
Did I miss the post that said you were pregnant?

Since I regularly eat about 75% of their no-nos, I'm guessing this will never be the diet for me!

Please ignore that list and listen to your OB!!! Please - I ate most of that stuff on that list and my daughter is the top student in her class. You will be fine. But talk to your doctor - never take advice from strictly a book.
