The Battle of the Bottle

Happy 4th of July!

Yesterday Heather, Dana and Brian came to visit. It was a lot of fun. Even though the weather here in Jersey was rainy we still had a BBQ. Eliza enjoyed her company. Dana brought her some awesome books (and adorable clothing) that I am pretty sure will show up in Eliza's book club. Heather brought her soda/seltzer making machine so she and Alli were whipping up some tasty drinks. Overall it was a great day.

EXCEPT... I WAS A LITTLE STRESSED BECAUSE
Eliza NEVER wants to drink her bottle anymore. Ever since she started crawling/standing she doesn't care about drinking. Yesterday she barely touched one of her bottles. I tried repeatedly but she just wasn't interested. Then this morning she woke up and only wanted 3 oz! I had to battle it out with her to get her to take a little more. Shouldn't she be hungry after not eating ALL night long. She wants to play, play, play and doesn't seem to care about eating. However,She gobbles down her solid food so I know it isn't tummy trouble. I am thinking this is probably normal for some kids-but they probably don't have neurotic mothers.

At 9 1/2 months she currently gets offered 4 7oz bottles at 6:30, 10:00, 2:00, and 7:00. She eats breakfast at 10:00, lunch at 2:00 and dinner at 6:00. She usually drinks between 24-28 oz of formula. I just worry that she won't be getting enough formula now that is has lost interest in her bottle. Even if I give her the bottle before her solids she doesn't seem to want it one way or the other. Yet, she will eat her food with no problems.

This is a pickle. Any suggestion would be wonderful.

I hope everyone has an amazing weekend.

It's amazing how little kids seem to need to eat to survive. And some seem to eat enough one day to last the rest of the week - and then eat very little the rest of the week. From all the advice I've read, I wouldn't worry at all unless she seems to be getting sick, acting weak, or not gaining weight.

I know Esme has gone through lots of phases in her eating habits, and I just adjust to them without stressing too much or making an issue of what she won't eat. Though sometimes it drives me nuts trying to think of alternatives to bread, rice, and pasta that she will allow down her throat!

Glad you all had a good 4th...

Avery went thru a very similar thing when he started crawling and eating more solid foods and my ped said it was fine - eventually they slow down taking in more formula, but as long as they are getting in some food somewhere....

Have you tried putting the formula in a sippy cup? She seems a little young, but it might work.

I've always heard that babies only eat what they need. It is hard from a mommy standpoint when they don't eat very much, but if she still active and healthy then she's fine.

Good luck!

I used to have this same problem with Porgie. For months, I could only get her to take 2 or 3oz at each feeding, which equaled out to be about 10 oz in a day. In addition to her bottles, I started giving her a cup of milk with each meal. This helped ease my fears that she wasn't getting enough milk.

I agree about the sippy cup. Actually both of my girls were off bottles and on sippy's by 8 months of age. It is a good time for a switch. This might make it more "fun" for her to drink. Don't stress it. As long as she is taking adequate solid food, this is the time they really start slowing down on the drinking. Solid food is just more fun. Keep offering it to her the times you have scheduled but don't stress about the amount.

I agree to try a sippy cup or straw cup. I would continue to offer it and even have it available all time time if needed

Don't worry. It is normal. Grace weaned herself from the bottle too. At 1 she was down to just a morning bottle and then cut that out. I totally freaked too. Eliza is just graduating to real food.
